WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES – Footage Reaction Video – CinemaCon 2017

Yesterday the new trailer for War For The Planet of the Apes was released online and it was pretty incredible. This looks like it's going to be an amazing sequel. The trailer premiered at the 20th Century Fox presentation at CinemaCon and while we were there they also showed us an extended clip introducing us to one of the new characters in the film that the creative team says we're going to love. We talk about this scene, the character, and more in our reaction video above.

In War for the Planet of the Apes, the third chapter of the critically acclaimed blockbuster franchise, Caesar and his apes are forced into a deadly conflict with an army of humans led by a ruthless Colonel. After the apes suffer unimaginable losses, Caesar wrestles with his darker instincts and begins his own mythic quest to avenge his kind. As the journey finally brings them face to face, Caesar and the Colonel are pitted against each other in an epic battle that will determine the fate of both their species and the future of the planet.

War For the Planet of the Apes comes out on July 14th.

Review: GHOST IN THE SHELL Is a Visual Masterpiece

I was more than a little excited to see Ghost in the Shell. I absolutely loved the original 1995 Japanese animated film that was based on the Manga by the same name and saw a lot of potential in a live-action remake. There is some pretty incredible stuff being done with special effects these days, so I was stoked to see just what they were going to do with it. If you’ve seen the original, you’ll know what I’m talking about. I’m not usually a fan of live-action remakes, but my hopes were high for this one.

Scarlett Johansson plays Major, the first ever cyborg implanted with a human brain. She works on a special task-force called Section 9, fighting terrorists and other really bad guys. When higher-ups from Hanka Robotics (the company responsible for Major’s existence) begin to die, Major tries desperately to find the hacker responsible for the murders.

Pilou Asbæk is a perfect — and I mean perfect — live-action replica of Batou. He looks exactly like the animated character, and if you’ve seen the trailers, you’ll notice that there’s a slight difference in the way he looks in a couple different shots. Although this is explained in a plot point that is different from the original movie, it didn’t bother me at all.

A lot of people complained about the casting of Johansson in this role, but I thought she did a fantastic job as Major. She looks so much like the animated character with big, expressive eyes that perfectly portray the conflict between humanity and technology. This is also one of the first times I’ve seen her in a movie where they didn’t oversexualize her character, something that would have been very easy to do, but irrelevant to the storyline.

That brings me to my first negative point. If you’ve seen the trailer, you’ll notice a glaringly obvious fake nude bodysuit. With such impeccable special effects, Major’s body looks like a silicone onesie. They made very little effort to make it look like real human skin, which didn’t make sense at all. I understand how distracting a realistic nude suit would be, but it couldn’t be more distracting than being able to see where the suit ends at Johansson’s neck and fingertips.

Ghost in the Shell is the most visually stunning film I’ve seen to date, and I don’t say that lightly. I’m a huge cinematography nerd, and for me, this film was as good as it gets. The action sequences were captivating, and they copied a lot of the visuals from the original film, which couldn’t have been easy, so major props to them.

What didn’t make this film a perfect ten for me was how much they babied the audience. There’s an intro at the beginning that explains that it’s the future, and that human/cyborg hybrids exist. Because you couldn’t figure that out on your own, apparently. Then, within the first five minutes, they use the title of the movie, albeit broken up. But come on. This isn’t Zootopia. We’re all adults here, you don’t need to explain the title of the movie right off the bat. They use the words “ghost” and “shell” enough later on that I’m pretty sure anyone who had any questions about what the title means could figure it out by the end.

But perhaps the biggest problem I had with this films was how much it deviated from the original storyline. So much so that they completely obliterated one of the main themes of the original. For me, one of the most incredible parts of the original Ghost in the Shell was how existential it was. Concepts like the definition of life and death, birth and family, and the evolution of humanity really made Ghost in the Shell a work of art. All those ideas are sort of touched on in this remake, but the main theme is changed to make it more relevant to a larger audience.

And I totally get why. Obviously a huge action blockbuster isn’t going earn gobs of money asking people about the meaning of life. At leas,t not in the spiritual, existential way that the original did with drawn-out sequences and sparse dialogue. In order to make this film more marketable to the broader part of Western society, they had to tone things down quite a bit.

I actually liked how much they addressed the issues of technology, privacy, and individuality in the modern world. Although these ideas are pretty overused in sci-fi movies, I think they’re all the more relevant in this day and age.

I get why they did it, and I honestly didn’t mind it, until the end. Which I’m not going to spoil for you.

Die-hard fans of the original film and comics are probably going to appreciate the visuals of this film, but there are some serious changes to the plot that are going to be major hang-ups. If you don’t know a thing about the originals, you’re probably going to love this movie. I was really torn, because I absolutely loved the animated film and its message, but I really appreciated what they did with this remake.

Watch: Bart Simpson Voice Actress Blows 13 Year Old Kid’s Mind

This 13 year old kid gets the shock of his life when he realizes he's selling candy to none other than Bart Simpson! In his defense, I would have no idea what Nancy Cartwright looks like in person so I probably would've been just as caught off guard when some middle aged woman struts up to me and starts saying "Aye Carumba"...who wouldn't? His reaction when it clicks though is amazing and really makes me smile as a fan of The Simpsons. Good to see younger kids still appreciate the classics!

ATOMIC BLONDE – Footage Reaction Video – CinemaCon 2017

We've already seen a trailer for Charlize Theron's new action film Atomic Blonde, but we got to see some additional footage from it at CinemaCon, and you can watch us talk about that footage and what we think of the film in the reaction video above.

Atomic Blonde offers a breakneck action-thriller that follows MI6’s most lethal assassin through a ticking time bomb of a city simmering with revolution and double-crossing hives of traitors.
The crown jewel of Her Majesty’s Secret Intelligence Service, Agent Lorraine Broughton (Theron) is equal parts spycraft, sensuality and savagery, willing to deploy any of her skills to stay alive on her impossible mission. Sent alone into Berlin to deliver a priceless dossier out of the destabilized city, she partners with embedded station chief David Percival (James McAvoy) to navigate her way through the deadliest game of spies.

The movie also stars John GoodmanTil Schweiger (Inglourious Basterds), Eddie Marsan (Ray Donovan), Sofia Boutella (Star Trek Beyond, The Mummy), and Toby Jones (Captain America: The First Avenger).

Atomic Blonde hits the big screen July 28th.

Awesomely Thrilling New Trailer for WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES

20th Century Fox has released the new trailer for director Matt Reeves' War for the Planet of the Apes! This movie is looking incredibly complex based on what we see in the trailer. Caesar and his fellow apes are doing all they can to protect themselves against Woody Harrelson's "Colonel" and his army of humans. Far from being black and white, it would appear that Caesar has taken in a human girl and a gorilla has joined up with the human militia, blurring the lines of ape versus man. I love the dark tone and direction that Reeves is going in. War is looking to be another amazing chapter in the new Planet of the Ape franchise.

Here's a brief synopsis:

In War for the Planet of the Apes, the third chapter of the critically acclaimed blockbuster franchise, Caesar and his apes are forced into a deadly conflict with an army of humans led by a ruthless Colonel. After the apes suffer unimaginable losses, Caesar wrestles with his darker instincts and begins his own mythic quest to avenge his kind. As the journey finally brings them face to face, Caesar and the Colonel are pitted against each other in an epic battle that will determine the fate of both their species and the future of the planet.

Let us know what you think of it. The film comes out on July 14th.

Christopher Nolan’s DUNKIRK – Footage Reaction Video – CinemaCon 2017

During the Warner Bros. presentation at CinemaCon we got to see some incredible new footage from director Christopher Nolan's upcoming World War II film Dunkirk. This is one of my most anticipated movies of the year, and I'm excited to share with you a video of Drew and I talking about what we saw! Check it out above!

The movie was inspired by Operation Dynamo, which was a 1940 mission that freed over 340,000 British and Allied troops who were trapped and surrounded by the Nazis in the French city of Dunkirk. It was one of the largest organized retreats in modern military history. That would have been one hell of a scary situation to be in.

The film has an incredible cast that includes Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, Kenneth Branagh, Mark Rylance, James D'Arcy, and Harry Styles

Dunkirk is set to open in theaters on July 21, 2017.

Tour the Color Palette of the Entire STAR WARS Universe in One Minute Video

It's safe to say that if you're reading GeekTyrant, there's an incredibly high probability that you know the Star Wars movies backwards and forwards. Many of you have studied them in depth, but how often have you stopped to consider the colors used in these films? This one minute video, entitled Star Wars in Color, dips into the palette that George Lucas and other filmmakers have used over the course of the franchise.

Australia Just Had A Sharknado

Australia just had a Sharknado. Gizmodo tells us the state of Queensland was recently hit by cyclone Debbie, and in the midst of all the cleanup and chaos, a shark (pictured above) was found in a puddle in the city of Ayr. The bull shark was about 5 feet long and found dead before anyone could attempt to help it. It is unknown if the shark killed anyone in an epic way as it swirled along in the cyclone.

Get Hype For WRESTLEMANIA With This Awesome Metal Version Of Shinsuke Nakamura’s Theme

I don't talk about my love of wrestling often on GeekTyrant, but when I do, it's because Wrestlemania is just around the corner. This Sunday fans will pack into Orlando to see all their favorite wrestlers clash in a five hour event that always manages to make the past year of dedication and occasionally bad story lines pay off. If you're someone who's stepped away from wrestling for awhile, I can't express enough that now is the time to get back in as the roster is as diverse and full of likable guys as ever.

One of those guys is "The King Of Strong Style" NXT (basically WWE minor league) Shinsuke Nakamura. Nakamura was/is John Cena levels of famous in Japan, and his short time in WWE has shown he could do the same in the States. Most of this is due to his style of wrestling and the fact that he has an incredibly badass theme. That theme gets even more badass when someone does a metal cover of it! Check it out below and if you've never seen Shinsuke in action, you gotta see his entrance video from a year back because it's a thing of beauty. Anyone watching Wrestlemania this weekend? Do we even have wrestling fans on GeekTyrant?
