Disney went out on a year-long worldwide hunt for the perfect actress to take on the lead role in their live-action adaptation of Mulan... and they found her! Chinese actress Liu Yifei, also known as Crystal Liu, will take on the lead role in the movie.
Disney and the creative team traveled to five continents and auditioned nearly 1,000 candidates for the role. They were looking for someone with "credible martial arts skills, the ability to speak English and the most ineffable requirement of all: star quality." Variety goes on to explain why Liu was ultimately cast in the film saying:
In Liu, Disney found the complete package. Nicknamed "Fairy Sister" by the Chinese public for her pure and innocent looks and image, she has been one of the country's most popular actresses of the current generation since breaking out with a series of hit television dramas in the mid-2000s, while she was still a teenager enrolled in the Beijing Film Academy. She is fluent in English, having lived in Queens, N.Y., for part of her childhood, and acted in English in both 2008's The Forbidden Kingdom, alongside Jackie Chan and Jet Li, and 2014's Outcast, opposite Nicolas Cage and Hayden Christensen. She also starred opposite Emile Hirsch in Danish auteur Bille August's period romance The Chinese Widow, which opened the Shanghai International Film Festival in June.
Liu, who has served as a brand ambassador for Dior, Tissot, Garnier and Pantene, most recently starred in the fantasy romance Once Upon a Time, which earned $82.3 million in China this summer. Her other credits include 2012's The Assassins, which earned Liu her first major acting award (at the Macau International Movie Festival), Never Gone and The Four trilogy.
Sounds like that got everything they were looking for and it's going to be cool to see her bring the character of Mulan to life on the big screen.
Mulan is being directed by Niki Caro (The Zookeeper’s Wife), and the film will be reelased sometime in 2019.
This first trailer has been released for an interesting new religious film called Mary Magdalene, and it actually looks really good. It doesn't hurt that the film has a great cast that includes Rooney Mara (The Social Network, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo) in the title role and Joaquin Phoenix (Walk the Line, The Master) in the role of Jesus Christ.
The movie comes from Gareth Davis (Lion) and it tells the story of Mary Magdalene and the relationship she had with Jesus. Here's the synopsis"
Mary Magdalene is an authentic and humanistic portrait of one of the most enigmatic and misunderstood spiritual figures in history. The biblical biopic tells the story of Mary (Rooney Mara), a young woman in search of a new way of living. Constricted by the hierarchies of the day, Mary defies her traditional family to join a new social movement led by the charismatic Jesus of Nazareth (Joaquin Phoenix). She soon finds a place for herself within the movement and at the heart of a journey that will lead to Jerusalem.
Mary Magdalene also stars Chiwetel Ejiofor and Tahar Rahim. It's set to be released in theaters on March 16, 2018.
A few weeks ago we learned that Disney Studio was looking to purchase 20th Century Fox. Those talks eventually died down and then it was reported that Sony Pictures was looking to get in on the action. It doesn't seem like thing worked out with them or the other companies that were interesting in buying up Fox because now, according to Deadline, Disney and Fox are back in talks! There is also speculation that a deal is close to being made.
Disney is progressing speedily toward that rumored acquisition of Fox. The version I heard has the Murdoch clan keeping possession of sports and news properties, and the rest of TV and the film studio going to Disney. Radio silence right now from both studios, and given how Disney made the Marvel and Lucasfilm deals under the cone of silence, if this happens we’ll probably only know it when it’s announced.
So, there's a chance that sometime in the near future the news will break that Disney has purchased Fox. What makes this news so exciting for us is that this means Marvel will actually regain control of the X-Men and Fantastic Four characters, which would be pretty amazing!
I just hope that Marvel and Disney allow some of these franchises to keep pushing the boundaries with their R-rated film content like Logan and Deadpool. It'd be a shame if we ended up getting a PG-13 X-Force film!
We'll keep you updated on this news as it progresses. Do you hope that this deal actually goes through?
Micro Transactions are not a new topic. They have been in the spotlight more recently because of EA’s terrible misuse of them in Star Wars Battlefront II. In short, gamers don’t want to spend $60 on a game and not have all of the content readily available. That’s not to say they don’t want to have to unlock things, but it shouldn’t take you 40+ hours to unlock one character. Multiply that by more than one and you have a much bigger problem. Then there’s the fact that you could just buy that same character for additional money and we’re adding insult to injury as we have now created a pay-to-win system that is no fun for anyone. There’s more to it, but that should be enough to get you the basics.
To help illustrate how ridiculous this system is and how microtransactions are getting out of hand, Viva La Dirt League created an episode of Epic NPC Man around this idea. The adventurer goes to continue his quest when an NPC informs him that he must pay real money for it, or spend hours upon hours grinding to get the in-game currency needed. More things happen that he is informed will require even more real-world money to deal with.

A new TV spot has been released for Ridley Scott's upcoming film All The Money in The World and it gives us our first look at Christopher Plummer in the role of J. Paul Getty.
As you may have heard, the film had completed shooting with Kevin Spacey in the role, but after all of the sexual allegations came out against the actor, Ridley Scott and the studio made the decision to reshoot all of his scenes with Christopher Plummer. If you want to compare Plummer's version of the character with Spacey's, you can watch the original trailer for the film here. Plummer is a great actor, so there's no doubt he'll give an incredible performance.
The film tells the true story of the kidnapping of 16-year-old John Paul Getty III. The movie has an incredible cast that also includes Michelle Williams, Mark Wahlberg, Romain Duris, Charlie Plummer and Timothy Hutton. Here's the synopsis:
At 3 a.m. on 10 July 1973, Getty, then age 16, was kidnapped in the Piazza Farnese in Rome. A ransom note was received, demanding $17 million in exchange for his safe return. When that ransom message arrived, some family members suspected the kidnapping was merely a ploy by the rebellious youngster as he had frequently joked about staging his own kidnapping to extract money from his frugal grandfather. He was blindfolded and imprisoned in a mountain hideout. A second demand was received, but had been delayed by an Italian postal strike. John Paul Getty, Jr. asked his father for the money, but was refused. Getty Sr. argued that were he to pay the ransom, then his 14 other grandchildren could also be kidnapped. In November 1973, an envelope containing a lock of hair and a human ear was delivered to a daily newspaper with a threat of further mutilation of Paul, unless $3.2 million was paid: "This is Paul's ear. If we don't get some money within 10 days, then the other ear will arrive. In other words, he will arrive in little bits."
At this point Getty Sr. agreed to pay a ransom, although he would only pay $2.2 million, because that was the maximum amount that was tax deductible. He loaned the remainder to his son who was responsible for repaying the sum at 4% interest. The reluctant Getty Sr. negotiated a deal and got his grandson back for about $2.9 million. Getty III was found alive in a filling station of Lauria, in the province of Potenza, on 15 December 1973, shortly after the ransom was paid.
Sony will release All the Money in the World in theaters on December 8, 2017.
While Joss Whedon took over for Zack Snyder on Justice League, he didn't get a credit as co-director,but he was named as a writer alongside Chris Terrio, for his part in re-writing those reshoots (as well as directing them).
It does seem a little strange that even though he was so involved with the film, Whedon never shared so much as a Tweet in support of the movie or offered a single interview about his part in the production. Whedon did, however, "like" a series of Tweets that bashed the movie, specifically the villain Steppenwolf, which is something that upset a lot of fans.
Now there is a theory making the rounds on the internet that Whedon is even trolling Justice League on the screen of the movie itself. The speculation claims that during Justice League's opening credits, when Terrio and Whedon's names come up you can see a homeless man on the street and the scene immediately following features a sign he's holding that reads, "I tried." Some fans believe this was a message of sorts from Whedon suggesting he tried (and failed) to save the movie.
It is also possible that this doesn't mean anything and is merely a coincidence. What do you think?
Since the addition of Spider-Man to the MCU, it goes without saying that it's not impossible for other Marvel characters that call different studios home to become a part of it. For example, there is one major team that has yet to join the franchise. Film rights have kept the X-Men from joining the MCU as of yet, but one X-Men producer would really like to see the crossover happen.
Recently, Vanity Fair spoke to X-Men producer Lauren Shuler Donner who enthusiastically threw in her support to have the mutant icons team up with the Avengers in theaters.
“Well, I wish. I would love it. I would love it. But it’s not for me to say.”
Feige also chimed in but the Marvel Studios president refused to give fans hope where there is none.
“Well, the problem is whenever I say anything about it, it becomes 15 headlines. So would we like to? Yeah, of course,” Feige said, signaling his continued desire to get the X-Men back.
“Is there any movement toward it at all? No. Same thing. Same status.”
According to recent reports, Disney was in talks with Fox at one time to buy most of the company’s assets save its news and sports IPs. As you say rumors about the X-Men opening up to the MCU ran wild. But as of now, it seems like those talks have died down, but there is a chance Disney could put enough cash down to tempt Fox into letting the X-Men go.
But Fox might be hesitant to let such a franchise go. The X-Men film franchise is doing well right now as well as hits like Logan and Deadpool. The series will grow even more in 2018 when The New Mutants and Deadpool 2 are released before X-Men: Dark Phoenix and Gambit’s solo film come to theaters.
What do you think? Would you like to see the Mutants join forces with the Avengers? Or is it better to have their worlds separated?
