George R.R. Martin Wants to Call The New GOT Series THE LONG NIGHT and Gives an Update on the Other Prequels

Last week we learned that HBO was developing a Game of Thrones prequel series that would be set 1,000 years before the events of the current series. This is what we learned about the series when it was announced:

Set thousands of years before the events of Thrones, the project chronicles the world's descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. A logline from the network teased the plot wihtout divulging any specifics: "Only one thing is for sure: from the horrifying secrets of Westeros' history to the true origin of the White Walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend… it's not the story we think we know."

Since the series was announced, co-creator of the new series George R.R. Martin posted an update on his personal blog. There he reveals that he would like the title of the series to be The Long Night. He also talked about the other prequel series that are in development noting that they are all prequels.

"All of the successor shows we’ve been developing have been prequels, as I have mentioned before. This one really puts the PRE in prequel, since it is set not ninety years before GAME OF THRONES (like Dunk & Egg), or a few hundred years, but rather ten thousand years (well, assuming the oral histories of the First Men are accurate, but there are maesters at the Citadel who insist it has only been half that long). We’re very early in the process, of course, with the pilot order just in, so we don’t have a director yet, or a cast, or a location, or even a title. (My vote would be THE LONG NIGHT, which says it all, but I’d be surprised if that’s where we end up. More likely HBO will want to work the phrase “game of thrones” in there somewhere. We’ll know sooner or later)."

If you aren't familiar with The Long Night, it's a historical event in Westeros, where winter lasted an entire generation. It was also the era where the Children of the Forest created the White Walkers and Bran the Builder built the Wall. It was also the time of the legendary hero Azor Ahai who wielded a burning sword called Lightbringer.

If these things don't get you excited for the new series, I don't know what will! I love the fact they are going to explore this time in Westeros history.

Martin also went on to explain the status of the other prequels in development:

"If you have been following along, you know that we started with four, and eventually went to five. One of those has been shelved, I am given to understand, and of course Jane’s pilot is now moving to film. But that does not mean the others are dead. Three more GAME OF THRONES prequels, set in different periods and featuring different characters and storylines, remain in active development."

Martin when on to say that out of those, maybe one or two more pilots will be ordered. Are you excited about the future of this fantasy franchise?

Crazy Cool New SPIDER-MAN Game Trailer Reveals The Awesome Supervillain Lineup!

A brand new gameplay trailer for Insomniac Games' upcoming Spider-Man game has been released and it managed to get me even more excited for the game! Not only does the new trailer feature tons of radical footage, it also reveals the epic roster of villains! Those villains include Rhino, Scorpion, Vulture, Kingpin, Mr. Negative, and Electro.

In the trailer we see all these villains gang up on Spider-Man when they break out of the prison RAFT, which is the Avengers’ off-shore prison. Spider-Man does his best to fight them off but they just keep coming at him. At the end of the trailer, Spider-Man is getting the crap beat out of him by these classic villains. Then, all of a sudden, there's a bright white light that shines down on them and they are left looking stunned. Even Spider-Man is surprised! Then the trailer ends.

We have no idea what or who this bright light is! The trailer totally leaves you hanging! This is my most anticipated game of the year. It just looks like it's going to be so freakin' fun!

Spider-Man will be swinging onto PlayStation 4 September 7th!

CALL OF DUTY BLACK OPS 3 Is Free Tonight On PS+ And E3 Trailer Features Maps Remaster

BO3 (1).jpg

As a gift from Playstation, they have announced that they will be gifting the latest Call of Duty title to all PlayStation Plus users for free tonight. This is following the short E3 trailer that features a Map Remaster DLC that will be available for both Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 and Black Ops 4. They finish the trailer by saying that you get the remastered maps DLC, titled Back in Black Maps, when you pre-order Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. Check out the trailer:

The maps they have featured are some of the most popular maps from the original Black Ops game and it is good to see that they are taking their fan bases desires into account of what they want to add to their game. Its always better for both players and developers when they bring back what was popular to their newer titles. A little nostalgia goes a long way.

Which announcement are you more excited for? The free Call of Duty Black Ops 3 for Playstation Plus players or the Map Remaster pack for both Black Ops 3 and 4?

It’s Explained That Amazon’s LORD OF THE RINGS Series is Not a Remake or Whole New Thing

I'm pretty stoked about The Lord of the Rings series that Amazon is developing so I'll soak up whatever information I can get! The last thing we heard was that Jackson would not really be involved, but he was helping put together a creative team to help them.

Amazon is currently on the hunt for a team of writers to bring the series to life. In preparation for developing the series, Variety reports the new head of Amazon, Jennifer Salke, spent three hours with J.R.R. Tolkien’s grandson, Simon Tolkien, to talk about Amazon’s plans for the franchise. Once they have a team together they will meet with the Tolkien estate to see how they would like to proceed. Salke explained:

"It’s a partnership. They have some lines in the play on this on strategy and on vision. The great news about that is that they’re actually really thoughtful and smart, as you would expect."

When talking about what this series will end up looking like Salke explained that it’s still too early to tell. But she did say:

"It’s not a remaking of the movies, and it’s not a whole new thing. It’s something in between. It’s not, ‘Oh, it’s Lord of the Rings but you don’t recognize anything in it,’ but it’s not totally familiar to you either. So it’s original."

It's certainly going to be interesting to see how this turns out! It was recently rumored that the series could focus on a young version of Aragorn, which would be incredible! I love that concept, and I hope that's the direction they take the series.

The character is the last Chieftain of the Dúnedain and a direct descendant through many generations of Isildur, the last High King of both Arnor and Gondor. Aragorn would become the greatest man of his time, leading the Men of the West against Sauron's forces, helping to destroy the One Ring, and reuniting the Kingdoms of Arnor and Gondor.

The series is expected to premiere sometime in 2021. There are plans for five seasons and they will be made on a budget of over $1 billion.

Are there any other aspect of Middle Earth that you'd like to see the series focus on?

There Are Rumors of a Possible HAWKEYE Solo Movie From Marvel and it Could Be a Different Incarnation of the Character

While we wait for Marvel Studios to officially announce what the next phase of Marvel movies will be, we have a new rumor to share with you, and I'm sure it will be followed by many other rumors over the course of the next year.

According to MCU Cosmic, who is the same outlet that originally reported that Marvel was developing a feature film adaptation of The Eternals, the studio is also developing a solo Hawkeye movie. They say:

"Back when I was first told of The Eternals, from the exact same source, I was also told that Marvel had ideas for a couple of other characters far into the future. These were not solidified plans, and in no way on any kind of schedule. If they were to happen, it wouldn’t be until well after 2022.
"But what I was told was that Marvel has ideas for a couple of different characters to do some kind of solo film in the future. One of these characters was Hawkeye."

During the recent Produced By 2018 conference, Feige said a few things about the future of the MCU that were compiled on Reddit. He said he's looking to "continue stories of characters you’re familiar with". Those will include "different incarnations of characters you know" along with the introduction of "completely new characters you never heard of before (unless ur a comics fan)."

It's here that things get even more interesting. Feige's comments of there being "different incarnations of characters". According to the report, this statement coincides with what they were told about the Hawkeye movie. They go on to say:

"I won’t say anymore because, again, it’s not something that is likely to happen for a long time if at all, but it’s definitely something that is on Marvel Studios’ radar."

That's pretty cool! Now, this could mean a few different things. We know that Hawkeye will most likely become Ronin in Avengers 4 so that would certainly be a different incarnation of the character. But, they could also introduce the character Kate Bishop who could take over the mantle of Hawkeye as well, which would give the studio another female lead to build a franchise around.

It will be interesting to see if anything comes of this. If there is some truth behind it, what would you like to see from a solo Hawkeye movie?

Now is the Perfect Time to Start Reading THE SEVEN DEADLY SINS Manga Thanks to Humble Bundle

I’m a huge fan of The Seven Deadly Sins anime that is on Netflix. I haven’t had the chance to go back and read the manga, but now may be the time to do it. Humble Bundle is offering up the first 22 volumes plus some other manga including some volumes of Ghost in the Shell, Ajin: Demi-Human, and Inuyashiki for as low as $15. If you go up to $20+ you’ll also get a healthy amount of Battle Angel Alita and some exclusive wallpapers and sneak peaks as well as a video of Yukito Kishiro drawing Battle Angel Alita. That is several hundreds of dollars worth of manga for as low as $20!

The great thing about Humble Bundle is that not only is it pay-what-you-want, but you can choose where the money goes. You can decide how much goes to the creator, Humble Bundle, or even charities. Hurry on over and get your manga for the summer!

Netflix Releases Full Trailer For GLOW Season 2 – “The Glow Must Go On”

Netflix has released a new trailer for GLOW Season 2 and if you were a fan of the first season, you're gonna love what's in store for the second. I enjoyed the first season of this series and this trailer definitely has me excited for Season 2.

The series is inspired by the short-lived show from the 80s and it follows a character named Ruth Wilder (Alison Brie), an out-of-work, struggling actress in 1980s Los Angeles who finds one last chance for stardom in the form of women's wrestling. Here's the synopsis:

Season 2 follows the women of GLOW as they become local celebrities, confronting the good, the bad, and the ugly realities of their newfound fame. As Ruth and Debbie settle into the day-to-day of making a season of TV together, they confront lingering issues at the heart of their friendship. Sam is still Sam, but now he has a teenage daughter living with him and twenty episodes to churn out. The wrestling is harder, the stakes are higher, and the hair is even bigger.

Inspired by the short-lived but beloved show from the 80s, GLOW tells the fictional story of Ruth Wilder (Alison Brie), an out-of-work, struggling actress in 1980s Los Angeles who finds one last chance for stardom when she’s thrust into the glitter and spandex world of women’s wrestling. In addition to working with 12 Hollywood misfits, Ruth also has to compete with Debbie Eagan (Betty Gilpin ) a former soap actress who left the business to have a baby, only to be sucked back into work when her picture perfect life is not what it seems. And at the wheel is Sam Sylvia (Marc Maron), a washed-up, B-movie director who now must lead this group of women on the journey to wrestling stardom.

GLOW was created by Liz Flahive (Homeland, Nurse Jackie) and Carly Mensch (Nurse Jackie, Orange Is The New Black, Weeds). The series also stars Betty Gilpin (Nurse Jackie, True Story) and Marc Maron (Almost Famous, Marc Maron: Thinky Pain).

Netflix’s GLOW will be back on June 29, 2018. Are you looking forward to it?

GeekTyrant Design-V10: Fullwidth Mobile to 4K

My earliest memory of entertainment news came in the form of Premiere magazine. It was bigger and glossier than the other movie magazines, some would say oversized, images inside went full bleed to the edge, it was a gorgeous magazine — those core design ideas have influenced every single design of GeekTyrant.

The previous design version 8 completed in 2015 was starting to show it's age. (Design-V9 is used on GameTyrant) The number of new mobile screen widths was making our ridged breakpoint heavy mobile code bloated. Also, the affordability of 4K screens started a growing number of readers with massive screens.

Knowing that I needed the reader feedback and time to make fixes, we launched the newest design for GeekTyrant late at night on June 7th. All you readers on Friday were basically beta testing the website. I spent Friday evening and the entire weekend fixing lots of bugs I just couldn't have tested for. So far the design has been very polarizing, which could be due to bugs, and just the new layout for larger screens.

The following are screenshots of how the site's design has evolved and changed from V8 to V10.

Fluid Mobile Layout

The mobile layout of the site makes better use of the width of the screen. If you have an iPhone Plus or large Android Phablet you paid extra for those pixels we make better use of them. V10 also introduces the "Featured Post" and "Post Collections" to the homepage so you can dive deep into the upcoming movies or collections like Trailer, Videos, and Art.

The Same But Different

If your browser window is 1200 pixels wide you will see some minor changes, images are a bit larger, typography is more refined. But the layout is mostly the same.

Taking it Widescreen

The most common monitor widths for GeekTyrant readers is 1440px and 1920px. The new fullwidth layout really starts to open up and you get super sized images and videos. This is my favorite new feature of the layout and I have a feeling will be the most divisive as well.

Load Times

Because the fullwidth layout is loading larger images the site does take a bit longer to load. Resizing your browser width to 1200px will return load times to normal. TIP: making your browser window super narrow will make the site load faster. (Images will be super small, obviously)

Compromising Full-Width for Usability

Images like posters look insane at fullwidth, so I've locked the max height of images to about 90% of the height of your browser window.

4K Screens

The layout for 4K screens is still evolving, but I think it's easily the best looking site in 4K. I'm still making changes to the layout for 4K screens and working toward optimizing the layout for 5K screens.

Notes for Web Dev Geeks

Only about 5% of code from the old design was used. Everything was redone in CSS Grid and Flex. The design uses custom properties and super heavy use of calc. Using clip-path in a few places and unfortunately, Edge does not fully support it. The custom code for V10 is about 1/3 the size of V8, I'm still refactoring to make the code cleaner.

Listening to Feedback

I'm watching the comments closely on the post and across the site for bug reports. Screenshot of a bug really helps (my email is below). If you don't like the layout or you love it, let me know what works and doesn't in the comments. Thanks for reading the super indulgent post I hope you like the new changes.
