Robert Axelrod AKA Lord Zedd From POWER RANGERS is Dealing with Complications from Surgery

Power Rangers fans, I have some rough news. Robert Axelrod, the man who played Lord Zedd and Rita’s henchmonster Finster in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, is in trouble. He apparently had back surgery recently and has been suffering some complications since. The original (and my personal favorite) Red Ranger, Austin St. John and Jason David Frank have both tried to help raise awareness of a GoFundMe campaign designed to help Axelrod. At the time of writing, the campaign has raised $8,000 out of its $10,000 goal in about 3 days. Here’s the messages from John and Frank:

And here’s the text of the GoFundMe. I have included a link to the campaign above if you feel so inclined.

Iconic villain, Robert Axelrod who voiced Lord Zedd & Finster in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers recently had a major back operation. Unfortunately he suffered complications from the surgery. He is currently recovering and unable to work. Please donate what you can to aide Robert during this difficult time.

When you donate or even if you are unable to help financially please post a message to this campaign for Robert to see. Better yet post a message and a photo of you and Robert if you have one. He has always enjoyed meeting his fans and hearing your stories.

James Wan’s SWAMP THING To Begin Filming This Fall

One of the titles being made for DC Universe that many fans are excited for is Swamp Thing. While we haven’t been given a release date, I think it’s safe to assume it will launch in 2019. Especially as Omega Underground is now reporting that the series is set to begin filming this fall in North Carolina. Not much is filmed in North Carolina, but that could work in Swamp Thing’s favor as it could allow for a more flexible schedule.

Swamp Thing will be executive produced by James Wan and Michael Clear with Mark Verheiden and Gary Dauberman serving as writers. Here’s the official description of the show:

When CDC researcher Abby Arcane returns to her childhood home of Houma, Louisiana, in order to investigate a deadly swamp-borne virus, she develops a surprising bond with scientist Alec Holland — only to have him tragically taken from her. But as powerful forces descend on Houma, intent on exploiting the swamp’s mysterious properties for their own purposes, Abby will discover that the swamp holds mystical secrets, both horrifying and wondrous — and the potential love of her life may not be dead after all.

SSBM Event Recap: OMEGA II

This past weekend, Super Smash Bros. Melee talent from across the country (and world) traveled to Long Island for OMEGA II, a regional event arguably more stacked than some tournaments billed as small majors. With over a dozen SSBMRanked players in attendance, viewers both in person and online were given a treat at OMEGA.

Though OMEGA II’s bracket was chock-full of surprises, its victor was the player everyone expected to succeed: top seed Zain “Zain” Naghmi. OMEGA marks Zain’s second large tournament victory after being signed by Panda Global after his Pound Underground win in May.

In second was top Spaniard Álvaro “Trif” García, who flew to the United States for the event alongside his countryman Roberto “Overtriforce” Iglesias. Overtriforce finished at a solid fifth place, losing only to Zain (in a close five-game set) and Cody “iBDW” Schwab, who himself finished at an impressive fourth place.

The tournament’s top four was rounded out by James “Swedish Delight” Liu, whose third-place finish marked a continuation of his success at the OMEGA series—Swedish was the champion of last year’s iteration of the event.

To finish out the top 8, top MD/VA Sheik Arjun “Junebug” Rao tied with Overtriforce at fifth, while Rosario “Darktooth” Fuschetto and Rishi “Rishi” Malhotra finished at seventh. OMEGA II was surely a disappointment for Rishi’s brother, Arjun “lloD” Malhotra, who finished in ninth place despite entering the tournament as one of its top seeds (and one of the few players with a decent shot at beating Zain).

However, Rishi and lloD more than redeemed themselves in the doubles bracket, taking the entire event from winner’s side despite being drastically underseeded at fourth under local tri-state teams. Though they suffered from out-of-region pressure and wild cheering for local opponents, Rishi and lloD can walk away from OMEGA II knowing that they are still one of the world’s top doubles teams.

TANK is a Radical 80s Inspired Vector Arcade Game Short Film That You’ve Gotta Watch!

I've got a totally awesome animated short film for you to watch today called Tank. The film was created by Red Giant’s Chief Creative Officer, Stu Maschwitz. As you'll see it was created in the style of those old-school vector arcade games from the 80’s like Battlezone and Star Wars.

It's just not the cool unique visuals as well, this thing also has a story, which follows a team of pilots that must take on a weapon of mass destruction in a battle to save their world.

I loved this! I thought this was just the coolest thing! it also has a great 80s-style synth musical score that was created by Ben Worley. As for how Stu created the film, he explains:

Putting aside current 3D modeling techniques, Stu looked to the past and built the world of Tank entirely in Adobe After Effects, using math, code, and hundreds of hours of painstaking animation work.

In case you're interested, I also included a "making of" video for the short film that was released as well so that you can see what exactly went into creating this nostalgic short. I can't wait to see what the filmmaker does next! I'd love to see a series of this!

James Gunn Confirms When GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3 Takes Place

Earlier today, we reported that Chris Pratt said  he thought that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was set in the past, prior to the events of Avengers: Infinity War. There's been a lot of teasing by the writers and directors at Marvel that this could be the case.

Director James Gunn has now confirmed when the third chapter in the story will be set, putting to rest all of this talk and speculation. He actually cleared this up a couple of days ago, but a lot of sites, like ours, must've missed it.

When asked by a fan when it would be set, James Gunn simply said, "it will be after." Which means the Avengers will find a way to fix what Thanos did and the Guardians of the Galaxy will be back in action!

Who from the Guardians team remains to be seen. The one character that most fans aren't quite sure about at this point in regards to returning is Gamora. So, now that that's been settled we can move on to all the other crazy things about the future of the MCU to speculate about!

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will arrive in theaters in 2020.

Five New STAR TREK Series Are In Development Including a Sequel To THE NEXT GENERATION with Patrick Stewart

Star Trek: Discovery has gone through a bit of drama lately as the showrunners of the series, Gretchen Berg and Aaron Harberts, were recently fired due to the abusive work conditions that they put their writing staff through.

Alex Kurtzman has since replaced them as the showrunner of the show and he just signed a new deal with CBS. A $25 million deal which will be part of a five-year plan to develop more Star Trek series for the network. There are currently six projects that are apparently currently in early development, one of them includes a sequel to The Next Generation series with Patrick Stewart reprising his role as Captain Picard!

First, Variety reveals details on the following four series that are in development:

  • A teen-oriented series set at Starfleet Academy from Stephanie Savage and Josh Schwartz, the duo behind the recent Dynasty reboot and Marvel’s Runaways adaptation.
  • A limited series with a currently confidential plot.
  • A limited series based around the beloved character Khan, from the original Star Trek and the classic film The Wrath of Khan—something that’s been rumored for a while as being spearheaded by Wrath of Khan director Nicholas Meyer.
  • An animated series with another currently confidential plot.

Those all sound great, but I'm most excited for this possible Next Generation sequel series that was reported by The Hollywood Reporter! The report says:

The new deal comes as rumblings about another Star Trek series, featuring Patrick Stewart reprising his role as Star Trek: The Next Generation's Capt. Jean-Luc Picard, have been heating up. Sources say Kurtzman and Akiva Goldsman, who left Discovery after season one, are attached to the Stewart-led reboot. CBS TV Studios declined to confirm the Stewart project as sources say a deal is far from completed and may not happen despite the fact that the actor recently teased his potential return to the franchise.

I hope that series happens because it could be amazing! It may have a long way to go, but it sounds like there's a chance that it could happen.

There's a new post on the official Star Trek website that confirms that the deal has closed and he will "extend the Star Trek franchise for television, developing new series, mini-series and other content opportunities, including animation."

Out of all the new shows that are mentioned to be in development, what are you most excited for?

The WHO Now Classifies Video Game Addiction As A Mental Disorder

The World Health Organization now recognizes video game addiction as a separate mental health disorder in its 11th International Classification of Diseases (ICD). The newly classified condition will be known as “gaming disorder,” which is described as a pattern of addictive behavior that takes “precedence over other life interests.”

According to Dr. Vladimir Poznyak, the medical professional who proposed the new diagnosis to the WHO’s decision making body, the intention of classifying game disorder in the ICD, is for medical professionals to be more “alerted to the existence of this condition”, which in turn will help people that are possibly suffering from the newly recognized disorder. However, not all psychologists agree that gaming disorder is worthy to be placed in the ICD.

Moreover, Dr. Poznyak said that game disorder has three significant characteristics that will help doctors make a diagnosis. First, “gaming behavior takes precedence over other activities to the extent that other activities are taken to the periphery,” he said. The second characteristic is when a person suffers from “impaired control of these behaviors,” Poznyak said. “Even when negative consequences occur, this behavior continues or escalates.” Lastly, the third characteristic is when a person’s personal relationship, education or occupation is negatively affected by the addiction to playing video games. The consequences of a person with a gaming disorder are real and may include, diet problems, sleep problems, and unwillingness to engage in physical activities, Poznyak noted.

These three characteristics that Poznyak described are somewhat similar to the behavior of a person suffering from a substance or gambling abuse. Also, for a correct diagnosis, the person concerned should be showing a consistent negative pattern of behavior for at least 12 months. So a weekend spent playing God of War and then returning to your usual routine afterward does not count.

“Millions of gamers around the world, even when it comes to the intense gaming, would never qualify as people suffering from gaming disorder. And let me emphasize that this is a clinical condition, and clinical diagnosis can be made only by health professionals which are properly trained to do that,” he said.

In the end, the goal of the WHO with the inclusion of gaming disorder in the classification is to spark a conversation and encourage further research and international collaboration. Hopefully, the attention given to this condition will encourage the proper institutions to conduct more research and discuss on how the recognition of this condition will affect people in the long run.

What are your thoughts on gaming disorder? Is the WHO correct in listing it as a mental health disorder? Or should we conduct more in-depth research on the condition first?

James Mangold’s BOBA FETT Film Probably Won’t Start Shooting Until 2020

A few weeks ago we learned that Logan director James Mangold was set to helm the standalone Boba Fett film for Lucasfilm and that seemed to get fans pretty excited. Unfortunately, the movie isn't going to be happening anytime soon.

According to Omega Underground, who first reported that the Boba Fett movie was going back into development a couple of years ago, have reported that director Josh Trank was fired from the project, and the movie won't go into production now until 2020.

One of the reasons that Mangold won't be getting around to the film anytime soon is because he is looking to start production on his Ford vs Ferrari movie in California this summer. He will be working with Matt DamonChristian Bale, and Jon Bernthal on that. He's going to be pretty busy with that through 2019 as he is making the press rounds for the film.

After that, he'll get started on Boba Fett! The current production scheduling at Lucasfilm includes J.J. Abrams' Star Wars: Episode IX shooting this summer, Jon Favreau‘s Star Wars TV series shooting in fall/winter, and then there's the Obi-Wan Kenobi movie, which will most likely start shooting in April 2019. Lucasfilm has yet to make an official announcement on that Kenobi film, but it seems like it's only a matter of time.

I think Mangold is going to do something incredible with the Boba Fett film and I can't wait to see what story he ends up telling.

There’s a Michael Jackson Musical Coming to Broadway

I know we don't post a lot of Broadway musical stuff on the site, but Micheal Jackson is getting his own Broadway musical and as a fan, that's pretty rad!

I recently took my fam to go see that the Las Vegas show Michael Jackson One and that thing just blew my mind! If you're ever in Vegas and you're a Micheal Jackson fan, you have to see it!

The Michael Jackson Estate and Columbia Live Stage announced that they are developing a new stage musical that will be inspired by the life of Michael Jackson. The show doesn't have a title yet, but it's expected to arrive on Broadway in 2020.

The show will boast a book by Lynn Nottage, a two time Pulitzer Prize winner known for “Sweat” and “Ruined,” two gritty dramas that grapple with subjects such as war and rust belt privation, both of which seem pretty far removed from the life of the Gloved One. The score will draw on Jackson’s catalogue — a list of pop favorites that includes “Thriller,” “Smooth Criminal,” “Beat It,” and “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough.” Tony Award winner and contemporary ballet superstar Christopher Wheeldon (“An American in Paris”) will direct and choreograph the production.

With the Jackson Estate involved, I doubt that the musical will go into any of the more controversial issues of Jackson's life.

I'm curious to see how this Broadway show turns out and I'll definitely be making the trip to New York to see it!
