Last week it was rumored that Jeremy Renner was up for the lead role of Detective 'Twitch' Williams in Todd McFarlane's Spawn. Well, Deadline is now reporting that the rumor is true. Renner has officially been cast in the movie and joins Jamie Foxx, who was previously cast as Spawn.
McFarlane had this to say in a statement regarding the casting and why he ended up bringing Renner to the role:
"As a first time director, I wanted to surround myself with the most talent and the most skilled people I can on all fronts. I was lucky enough to land Jason Blum and then Jamie Foxx, and I knew the person on screen the most is this police officer, Twitch Williams. We needed as strong a person as possible because he will be the face of the film. I took my naïve Hollywood approach again, and said let’s start at the top and work down. Jeremy was at the top. I’m a huge fan of his. The character doesn’t need to be a bodybuilder or GQ handsome. I was looking for somebody who’s a person you’ve met before; I needed someone who can pull off the grief of an average human being. I’ve seen Jeremy do that in more than a few of his movies. He was at the top of my list, just like Jamie.”
It's pretty awesome that McFarlane is landing the actors at the top of his list for this film. I've said before that it's hard to imagine Renner as Twitch but he's a great actor that will be able to pull off McFarlane's feature film vision for the character. McFarlane went on to say:
"Spawn is King Arthur and Twitch is Sir Lancelot, and this isn’t about physicality, or jumping over buildings. This is more a brawn and brain combination, and the first film I think of with him is The Hurt Locker, the army grunt doing the job, and that spilled out into all these roles leading up to Wind River. There was a sense of melancholy to that character that is important and that was a movie also made by a first time director, but one who wrote the thing and so wasn’t nervous about trying to get what you want. Jeremy had the experience of working with the first timer and saw that if you put a good crew together, the whole is way better than the parts and you don’t have to worry."
Producer Jason Blum added his two cents about the casting of Renner:
"Jeremy is the ideal choice for Twitch Williams. He radiates honesty, intelligence and a hard-working, everyman charisma, the same qualities that make Twitch such a compelling character."
McFarlane says the next step will be to lock down a distributor for the film which will have a 10 to 12 million dollar budget:
"Jason and I feel we have a strong package here. Academy Award nominated and Academy Award nominated actor. As a first time director, I guess I’m the weak link, but I think my brand is strong. Hopefully when we go to studios, fairly soon, we’ll get the interest of more than one and we can pick what place will do this project justice, marketing and distributing it. We’re going to go for as close to a green light as we can get, since the development process has already been done. We’re looking for someone to say, ‘yeah cool, we’ll take it.’ It’s a reasonable budget, we’re not asking anyone to stretch. The goal here is a quality project at reasonable price."
With the talent that Mcfarlane has brought in to develop this new Spawn film, I don't think he's going to have an issue landing a studio to distribute the film, especially with the extremely low budget that it has. I think this movie is going to be a big hit.
Are you happy to hear that Renner will be taking on the role of Twitch?
Netflix is really doing its best to get into the anime market. The Cannon Busters anime that was announced almost a year ago finally has a release date. If you’re a fan, you’ll just have to wait until April 1, 2019, for the LeSean Thomas created anime to hit the service. That’s only 9 months away…Thomas’ Cannon Busters comic was released back in 2005 and it sounds pretty awesome. Here’s a description of the 12-episode series from Netflix:
Netflix just announced its first original Indian Horror series for the platform, and it sounds pretty spooky. Ghoul takes its viewers inside an interrogation prison where the prisoners interrogated aren't always of this world. That sounds creepy as hell and with only three episodes to its name, it doesn't sound like a premise that will wear anyone out before they finish watching. Check out the official synopsis and the poster below, and get ready to stream this one on August 24:
Ghoul is a chilling series about a prisoner who arrives at a remote military interrogation centre and turns the tables on his interrogators, exposing their most shameful secrets. You can fight the demons of this world but what about the ones that aren't?
A group of fans got together to create a fan film based on the classic 80s comic book series Rogue Trooper which wascreated by Gerry Finley-Day and Dave Gibbons. For those of you not familiar with the comic, here's a summary:
It follows the adventures of Rogue, a "Genetic Infantryman", a genetically created, blue-skinned, manufactured super soldier and his three comrades' search for the Traitor General. His comrades are in the form of biochips – onto which a G.I.'s entire personality is downloaded at the time of death for later retrieval – and are named Gunnar (mounted on Rogue's rifle), Bagman (on his backpack) and Helm (on his helmet). He is genetically engineered to be immune to almost all known toxins, can submerge in strong acid unaffected, and is able to withstand a vacuum in his bare skin.
The short film is called Rogue Trooper: The Quartz Massacre and this is the synopsis:
Souther and Nordland forces have been locked in war for decades on Nu-Earth. The war has turned this planet toxic. Genetic Infantrymen designed to survive the poisonous atmosphere are deployed in a surprise offensive. The plan is leaked. The Nort Kashan Legion are prepared and waiting for the attack. The GI's don't stand a chance. They are ambushed in the Quartz Zone and are massacred.
The short was directed by Adam Kirley and it actually turned out really good for a fan film. There's a lot of passion behind the development of this project, which was self-funded, and I think fans of the comic series will enjoy it. Director Duncan Joneshas said that he would be interested in making a film based on 2000 AD property.

Marvel Studio and Sony Pictures have cast J.B. Smoove (Curb Your Enthusiasm) in Spider-Man: Far From Home. There are no details on who he will be playing, but according to Deadline, it's a lead role.
Smoove will join Tom Holland, Zendaya, Marisa Tomei, Jacob Batalon, Michael Keaton, and Jake Gyllenhaal, who is expected to be playing Mysterio. It'll be interesting to see who Smoove will end up playing.
We don't know much about the sequel but we do know that Peter Parker will be on summer vacation with his friends in Europe and that at some point he will be facing off with the villain Mysterio. You can read up on some additional rumored information regarding Far From Homehere.

Director Nicolas Winding Refn is creating his own streaming service (via Slashfilm), and it sounds like something a hardcore film buff would be interested in. Refn, who has brought the world features like Drive, The Neon Demon, and Bronson, is creating an absolutely free streaming service that will give access to several obscure cult films from around the world. Have you ever heard of the films Night Tide, The Nest of the Cuckoo Birds, The Burning Hell, or Hot Thrills and Warm Chills? Most of you haven't but for the low cost of nothing, you can experience these films and others, some of which have been remastered by Refn.

Captain Marvel has completed principal photography and the film's star Brie Larson has shared a photo on Twitter to mark the occasion. Over the past few months, we've seen some photos from the set featuring Larson in costume as Captain Marvel and a young Nick Fury, but there's still a lot that we don't know about the film.
The story follows Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races. Set in the 1990s, 'Captain Marvel' is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
This is the next film that Marvel will release and not long after that, Avengers 4 will hit theaters. I'm pretty excited about Captain Marvel and it's going to be so cool to see this character, who is said to be the most powerful character in the MCU, make her big screen debut!
The movie will also feature the return of Lee Pace and Djimon Hounsou as the Kree villain Ronan the Accuser and his henchman Korath the Pursuer from Guardians of the Galaxy. The movie also stars Clark Gregg, Ben Mendelsohn, Jude Law, Gemma Chan and Lashana Lynch. Other new cast members include Algenis Perez Soto (Sugar), Rune Temte (Eddie the Eagle), and McKenna Grace (I, Tonya).
Captain Marvelis being directed by the writing/directing team of Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, whose credits include Mississippi Grind and Half Nelson.
Captain Marvel is set to be released on March 8th, 2019.
