That Joker origin movie that we've all been hearing about that is being developed by DC Entertainment is officially a go at Warner Bros! According to THR, Joaquin Phoenix recently finalized his deal to star in the film and director Todd Phillips will start shooting in September in New York.
Phillips co-write the script for the film with Scott Silver, and then there's Martin Scorsese who is also a producer on the film. The studio describes the story as being an "exploration of a man disregarded by society [that] is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale."
This Joker movie is said to be going against the grain of most comic book movies. The report says that the Joker standalone movie is "meant to be different from other comic book superhero movies. " I like that they are looking to do something different with this character. WB is obviously experimenting with something new here and I'm actually looking forward to seeing what comes of it.
The budget is in the $55 million range, significantly lower than the tentpoles that dominate the form. And the standalone is meant to be darker and more experimental in tone and content (at least as experimental as a studio can be with established brands such as DC), which is described as being akin to a crime drama.
The story is also said to "delve into what it took for the Joker to become a mastermind criminal" and rumor has it that the film story was inspired by The Killing Joke and that it revolve around a failed comedian who ends up becoming a criminal.
I'm a lot more excited about this movie than the Jared Leto Joker solo film that's in development! Thre's no word on when the movie will be released, but it will most likely hit theaters at some point in 2019.
Director Ava DuVernay (A Wrinkle in Time) is in the process of developing her next project called Central Park Five and she has cast her leads. Michael K. Williams, Vera Farmiga and John Leguizamo are set to star in the five-episode narrative series that DuVernay will write and direct. The series will chronicle the notorious case of five teenagers of color from Harlem who were convicted of a rape they did not commit.
The series will tell the story of Antron McCray, Kevin Richardson, Yusef Salaam, Raymond Santana and Korey Wise and the story "will span from the spring of 1989, when each was first questioned about the incident, to 2014 when they were exonerated and a settlement was reached with the city of New York."
Williams will play Bobby McCray, devoted father of accused teen Antron McCray. Farmiga will play Elizabeth Lederer, the Manhattan Assistant District Attorney and lead prosecutor on the case. Leguizamo will play Raymond Santana Sr., the father of accused teen Raymond Santana Jr. Here's the synopsis that was released for the series:
Based on the true story that gripped New York and the world, the series will be a five-episode limited, scripted series that exposes the breakdown of our criminal justice system at every phase of the notorious Central Park Five case. Each part will focus on one of the five teenagers from Harlem -- Antron McCray, Kevin Richardson, Yusef Salaam, Raymond Santana and Korey Wise -- wrongly convicted of raping Trisha Meili in Central Park. The series will span from the spring of 1989, when each were first questioned about the incident, to 2014 when they were exonerated and a settlement was reached with the city of New York.
When previously talking about the project, DuVernay said:
"The story of the men known as Central Park Five has riveted me for more than two decades. In their journey, we witness five innocent young men of color who were met with injustice at every turn - from coerced confessions to unjust incarceration to public calls for their execution by the man who would go on to be the President of the United States."
I've watched a fascinating documentary surrounding this case and it's sure to make for a great series.
If you don't have 21 minutes to sit back and watch this film, save it for later and make time because this is one you'll want to watch! Superman and Robocop take on Skynet in an insane adventure that feels like what would happen if Robot Chicken took itself seriously. Side note: I now want the Robot Chicken team to make a film with a scenario as crazy as this! If not DGDX Animation seems to be holding it down for the time being, so check out the video and give them some love!
Avengers: Infinity War directors Joe and Anthony Russo are now developing a TV series adaptation of the the Valiant Entertainment comic book series Quantum and Woody for TBS.
The comic was co-created by writer Christopher Priest and illustrator Mark Bright, and was originally published in 1997. The comic draws inspiration from the characters played by Woody Harrelson and Wesley Snipes in 1992 comedy White Men Can’t Jump. The story centers around a pair of adoptive brothers who come together, after years of estrangement, by the mysterious death of their father. In the course of investigating, they are accidentally imbued with powers. The characters were later reimagined in 2013 by writer James Asmus and illustrator Tom Fowler.
With the Russo Bros. producing the series there's a chance that it could actually turn out to be a great and fun series. Deadline goes on to say that Joel McHale (Community) could be one of the stars in the series, but no casting decisions have been confirmed yet.
There are two other Valiant film projects in development and they include Bloodshot with Vin Dieseland the plus-sized female superhero comic Faith.
Have you read the Quantum and Woody comic and do you think it will make fort a good TV series?
The Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF) is proud to announce the success of the recent Overwatch charity campaign that allowed players to purchase a pink skin for Mercy, together with a cool shirt. Overall, Overwatch players who showed their support through their purchase was able to raise a whopping $12.7 million as an act of solidarity for Breast Cancer research.
BCRF also revealed that the $12.7 million raised by Overwatch players is the single largest donation by a corporate partner in the 25 years of the foundation's existence.

The donation will be utilized to help with "prevention strategies, improved treatments, survivorship, and quality of life for breast cancer patients worldwide."

At the start of the campaign a controversy began when the pink skin was introduced with a price tag of $15, while the t-shirt for $30. However, Blizzard was quick to clarify that those items are being sold for charity and that the studio is making zero profit from the sale of those in-game items.
We heard that Indiana Jones 5 was going to be delayed, but now Disney has made it official. The Steven Spielberg and Harrison Ford sequel will not be released until July 9th, 2021. The reason for the delay is writing issues. With Jonathan Kasdan (Solo) coming on board as the new screenwriter, it seems like he'll need more time to get the script in ship shape.
The studio has also shuffled a few other release dates for some of their upcoming films. Dwayne Johnson’s Jungle Cruise will now be released on October 11th, 2019, Angelina Jolie’s Maleficent 2 will now be released on May 29th, 2020, and Emily Blunt's Mary Poppins Returns will be released on December 19th, instead of the 25th.
The release date of another upcoming untitled Marvel film has been moved from July 30, 2021, to February 12, 2021. There's another untitled live-action Disney film set to take its first time slot.
I just want Indiana Jones 5 to be the best film it can possibly be. I hope it's up there in quality with the original three films. It would be great to see Indiana Jones on another fantastical adventure.

There's a fun new Star Wars children's book that's been released that will explore an aspect of Darth Vader that has never been explored before... the things that Darth Vader is afraid of. The picture book is called Are You Scared, Darth Vader? and it was written and illustrated by Adam Rex. As you might imagine, the book teaches kids about fear in a fun, relatable way but with a Star Wars spin.
During an interview with io9, the author talked about his book, saying:
"I ended up pitching a few broad ideas as well as an early draft of Are You Scared, Darth Vader? As an idea, it has one of those unsatisfying origin stories where I think the title came to me while waiting for a stoplight and I sat down to figure out what kind of book might have a name like that.
"The biggest theme that emerged as I worked on the book is that Darth Vader is an intimidating villain, but he’s your intimidating villain. He lives in your book, your DVD player, your imagination. He’s your action figure to toy with."
The book is not canon and not tied to any of the films. It's just a little book for kids to enjoy. Michael Siglain, the executive director of publishing at Lucasfilm, explained:
"With direct film tie-ins, publishing strives to make sure those titles enhance, support, or retell the films in exciting and dramatic ways. With books not directly tied to the films, but tied to the larger saga, we have opportunities for new and different approaches to the stories we can tell. Examples of this include our current Jedi Academy books, our Shakespeare Star Wars books, and, obviously, the spooky Are You Scared, Darth Vader? The one common denominator in all our titles is that they’re authentically Star Wars."

Even with no director attached to it, it appears that Sylvester Stallone's Rambo 5 is going to start production on September 1st. Omega Underground was able to get the inside scoop. Here's what we know about the story so far:
John Rambo ended with Rambo returning stateside to his family ranch in Arizona. The fifth film will have a neighboring rancher/friend see his daughter kidnapped by sex-traffickers who turn out to be members of violent drug cartel and the older Rambo agrees to find/rescue her.
His brother seemingly runs the family ranch now and it’s unknown if his niece is also kidnapped, as it could make it a more personal story including his family members into the mix.
It's being reported that the film is looking to shoot in Spain/Spanish Canary Islands. Tim Miller’s Terminator movie is also currently filming in Spain as the area is doubling for the Arizona-Mexico border.
I can’t help it, I loved the last Rambo. It had everything that I love in action flicks. Hopefully, Sly steps in and directs this one too. If not, I am sure he will find someone with the same passion for the project. What do you think? Are you excited for more Rambo?
