Everything that I’ve seen from Netflix’s new limited series Maniac has been fascinating. The story, ideas, and concept behind it are intriguing and I’m looking forward to seeing how the story plays out for the main characters who are played by Emma Stone and Jonah Hill.
Today we’ve got a new promo spot for you to watch along with new clip. The promo spot is an infomercial for a treatment facility called Neberdine Pharmaceutical Biotech and they are looking to cure depression in people. It includes Justin Theroux, Sonoya Mizuno, and Rome Kanda as the doctors who are running this place.
As for the clip, it focuses on two of these doctors discussing why Jonah Hill and Emma Stone’s characters are always finding their way back to each other after they keep trying to separate them.
Maniac is based on the 2014 Norwegian series and is set in the fantasy worlds of the characters that Jonah Hill and Emma Stone play. Here’s the synopsis:
Set in a world somewhat like our world, in a time quite similar to our time, Maniac tells the stories of Annie Landsberg (Emma Stone) and Owen Milgrim (Jonah Hill), two strangers drawn to the late stages of a mysterious pharmaceutical trial, each for their own reasons. Annie’s disaffected and aimless, fixated on broken relationships with her mother and her sister; Owen, the fifth son of wealthy New York industrialists, has struggled his whole life with a disputed diagnosis of schizophrenia. Neither of their lives have turned out quite right, and the promise of a new, radical kind of pharmaceutical treatment—a sequence of pills its inventor, Dr. James K. Mantleray (Justin Theroux), claims can repair anything about the mind, be it mental illness or heartbreak—draws them and ten other strangers to the facilities of Neberdine Pharmaceutical and Biotech for a three-day drug trial that will, they’re assured, with no complications or side-effects whatsoever, solve all of their problems, permanently. Things do not go as planned.
The series also stars Sally Field as Dr. Greta Mantleray, Sonoya Mizuno as Dr. Fujita, Aaralyn Anderson as Belle Milgrim, Geoffrey Cantor as Frank, Julia Garner as Ellie, Josh Pais as Andy, Jemima Kirke, and Rob Yang as Matt Ming.
Cary Fukunaga (Beasts of No Nation, True Detective) directed all of the episodes, and the show was written by Patrick Somerville. Maniac will hit Netflix on September 21, 2018. I also include a poster for the series below the videos.
